Took this trip to Carlsbad Carverns with my dad in 1995 on a trip we made through Colorado down through New Mexico. The same trip as the White Sands Desert. The caverns are amazing and although not desert per se I felt it needed to be included. I'm glad someone took the time to set it up they way they did with the lights, it's so beautiful and interesting. It's a paved walk-way throughout the caves so it's an easy walk. My dad took some awesome pictures, you're not allowed to use a flash so I don't know how he did it, steady hand I guess. It's amazing, the colors in the rock and the water, the beautiful shapes that nature can wear down over thousands of years untouched by man.
One thing, perhaps not so funny, is the thousands upon thousands of bats that live in these caves and the controversial joke I pulled on my dad while inside the caves. The funny thing about the joke is who thought it was funny. We didn't see any bats but we talked about while in the caves. At one point while standing behind my dearly beloved father, I pulled my hand inside my sweatshirt sleeve about six inches so it was hanging down a bit and then said, "whoa- was that a bat?" and then ruffled my sleeve a few inches away from his ear and back of his neck causing him to jump and twist his neck a bit. The thing is he really hurt his neck pretty badly and I felt and still feel really bad about it but he thought it was a pretty funny joke. He already had a bad neck and ended up having surgery for a herniated disk or something. Oh, the things we do...me.
