Welcome to the Desert

Ever since I first saw a picture of the White Sands Desert I've wanted to go. I'm so glad it's in the U.S. and not some far ofF African or Asian place I'd never make to. Unfortunately the day I made it there it was raining, but no big whoop, it was like an endless sea of snow white sand. We drove up in our truck and I jumped out in my stocking feet and ran as far as I could, diving off the dunes and rolling down to the ground and up the next. I screamed and shouted like a child and just kept running and kicking at the sand, twirling and dragging my feet in the soggy wet, white sand. The sky was grey with heavy dark rain clouds but the ground was a brilliant bright white. Every once in a while was the coolest looking Soaptree Yucca growing out of sand (see the pics). I ran and jumped around all day and watched one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. There's something to be said for desert sunsets, even in a storm, or perhaps especially in a storm, in White Sands Desert New Mexico.
