Welcome to the Desert

One of the best one-day hikes I've ever done was hiking up the Subway in Zion Nat'l Park at the end of the summer in 1993 with Justin Julander (JJ thanks for getting these pics to me and thanks for bringing the camera), Taji Peterson, Jared Orrock, Tammy Graham, Heather Williams and Matt Mikolash.
It rained every night we were there, creating a river through our campground and flash-flooding the hikes, like the Subway. Matt, Justin, Heather and I hiked the Subway. When we hiked it we went up the Subway not knowing any better. So we started out at the bottom, used other hikers ropes at Keyhole Falls to go up and from there discovering all kinds of the coolest caves and canyons most people miss coming down because we couldn't see a trail going up. People we passed cheered us on telling us how awesome we were for climbing up. We pushed & pulled each other up waterfalls and cliffs. I've since done the hike coming down and it wasn't near the experience going up. Part of the excitement was seeing the waterline from the flooding the night before way above our heads walking in canyons, the waters were murky and cold. Of course, Matt didn't care about getting wet, the red faded to tan speedo he wore made him look naked in the dark laying out on his sleeping bag to freak us all out. What a nut.
We starved ourselves too, not bringing enough food but top ramen noodles, spooked ourselves reminiscing about the movie Watcher in the Woods which we rented the night we got home and found it not to be anything like we remembered it as kids. Funny...
